AMALAR (pyrimethamine and sulfadoxine) x 3 TABLETS. Brand Name: Amalar. Generic Name: Pyrimethamine and sulfadoxine. Strength: pyrimethamine/sulfadoxine 25mg/500mg. Class: Anti-malaria. Form: Tablets. Pack size: 3 Tablets. Amount: ₦400. Description: Amalar (pyrimethamine and sulfadoxine) is an antimalarial medication used to treat malaria. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria and killing the parasites in the body. Key features: • Effective in treating malaria caused by chloroquine-resistant Plasmodium falciparum. • Administered as a single oral dose, usually following a course of quinine. • Can also be used for malaria prophylaxis, starting 1-2 days before travel to an endemic area and continuing for 4-6 weeks after returning. Side effects: • Severe reactions, including Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis, which can be fatal. • Skin rash. • Reduction in the count of any formed blood elements. Caution: • Discontinue use at the first sign of a skin rash, decrease in blood cell count, or occurrence of active infections. • Contraindicated in patients with blood dyscrasias, megaloblastic anaemia due to folate deficiency, and infants less than 2 months old.
